The Legacy of Denver West High School: A Commitment to Community and Diversity
Denver West High School, established in 1883, is one of the oldest secondary schools in Denver, Colorado. The school has a rich history that reflects the evolution of education and the community it serves. Over the years, Denver West High School has stood as a beacon of learning, exemplifying dedication to its students and the surrounding neighborhoods.

From its founding, West High School has embodied the spirit of the Cowboy with its first graduating class motto of “Forti et fideli nihil dificil” – To the brave and faithful, nothing is difficult.
In 1902, after merging with School District No. 1 (East) to become Denver Public Schools, West became the district’s “second” high school. In 1925, West moved into its current Gothic style building at 9th and Elati.

Throughout the 20th century, Denver West High School faced challenges that often reflected the changing times in Denver’s history. West High School has a history of activism and advocacy. In March of 1969, Chicano students organized walkouts to address the racism and discrimination they experienced in the classroom in protests known as the “West High Blowouts”. The demands of the students centered around the right to bilingual education, culturally relevant curriculum and equitable opportunities.

In 1985 West High School collaborated on the design of the Denver Center for International Studies (DCIS) as a magnet program within the comprehensive high school building. The success of that program would lead to a stand alone 6-12 grades program located in the Baker building in 2006. DCIS students would remain strongly connected to West High as participants in the athletic program.
Changes in educational policies and urban demographics led to a significant change in 2011 when it was announced that the existing West High School would be phased out and two new smaller 6-12 schools would emerge to provide choice to families and establish a middle school option in the area. West Generation Academy and West Leadership Academy opened in 2012 while the original “Legacy” West High School would phase out in 2015. In 2016, West Generation Academy would become a state designated early college known as West Early College.
In 2019, high school students from the two schools began advocating for a unification of the school community in an effort to embrace the school’s history, increase options for students and end the division between the two programs. The Board of Education approved the proposal in November of 2020 and the unified West High School was launched in 2021 through a community process.
Despite these obstacles, the school remained steadfast in its mission to provide quality education to every student. Throughout the years, the administration and staff have continually worked to create programs that support students’ academic and emotional needs, emphasizing the importance of a well-rounded education.
One of the noteworthy aspects of Denver West High School’s legacy is its strong connection to the community. The school has actively engaged with local organizations and families, promoting partnerships that enhance educational opportunities. Events such as cultural fairs, community service projects, and mentorship programs have strengthened the bond between the school and the neighborhood, demonstrating a shared commitment to the success of all students.
