In 2009-2010 West High School will take a major step forward in school redesign with the implementation of M.E.T.A.S. Over the past three years the staff of West High School has worked hard to create the vision and complete the initial planning for this project. Based on the nationally acclaimed STEM model, M.E.T.A.S. will combine best of the traditional high school with cutting edge school reform for the 21st century.
The New Denver West High School is committed to providing our diverse student population with an outstanding 21st century high school education with a college and career preparation focus. This will be achieved through career and academic pathway academies that are distinguished from each other by the specializations they provide: Medical, Engineering, Technology, Arts and Service Learning (METAS). The METAS Academies are based on a common sense approach to education that includes student choice, applied learning, and character education. Each of these academies will directly align with one of the identified post-secondary pathways. West High School and its post-secondary partners will work together to create academic and career pathways that will support students throughout their high school years and beyond.
The Medical Academy at West High School
The Medical Acadamy prepares students for all types of careers in the medical field from CNS to medical assistant, dental assistant, therapist, nurse or medical doctor. Students begin with a basic introduction to careers in medicine and can complete a CAN or EMT certification before graduation. Students can enter a 2-year or 4-year college for further advancements into the field of their choice such as nursing or M.D. MORE>>>
The Engineering Academy at West High School
The world of the Engineering Academy is full of opportunity in the areas of math and science. It prepares students for careers in engineering, aviation, construction and further research in math and science. Students choosing to participate in the Engineering Academy will build a strong foundation for post-secondary study at technical schools, 2-year colleges, and 4-year colleges and are encouraged to work on further degree or certification programs. The Technology Academy at West High School
The mission of the Technology Academy at West High School is to provide students with a solid understanding of how business functions in the American free enterprise system and how emerging technologies are defining business in the 21st century. Working in a project-based, community-based environment, students will learn the technical, business, and leadership skills necessary to be competitive in post-secondary studies and career. With CTE articulation agreements students will be able to earn college credit while still in high school and earn valuable industry certifications. The Arts Academy at West High School
Creativity is the focus of the Arts Academy. Students can focus on either the performing arts or fine arts. The Academy will offer indtruction in vocal music, instrumental music, drawing and painting, ceramics or jewelry. Located near the downtown area and the Santa Fe Arts district, students will have the opportunity to work on arts projects in the community. Students can continue study at an art school,a 2-year or 4-year college for further advancements into the field of their choice. MORE>>>
Service Learning
We believe that when students connect school to real life learning happens. We also believe that character education and leadership skills are essential to success in college and career. That is why service learning is part of all of the academies at West High School. MORE>>>
In 2009-2010, incoming freshmen to the New Denver West High School will have the opportunity to explore each of the METAS academies through a series of elective classes. As a sophomore, they will choose a major area of focus that aligns with their personal strengths and interests and they will be able to pursue that vision by selecting a sequence of electives for the entire time they spend at West.
